Joseph Haydn: A portrait
This year's festival takes a closer look at this giant of Western music. So much of what we call classical music today was defined by Haydn.
About the concert
Haydn was over 60 when he wrote the Piano Trio in F-sharp minor and the Sonata in C major. Both works come from the years he conquered London, but there are no triumphant fanfares here. Instead, we find a composer playing in the shadows, still surprising himself, and us.
The concert opens with Sally Beamish's "Trance" from 2023, a work that listens back to the master and shows how far his seeds have spread.
